Seminar: Nature Finance for a Sustainable Korea —Tackling Climate and Biodiversity Crises Together
Date & Time
Selected Sessions:
Mar 11, 2025 03:30 PM
Description
Biodiversity loss and climate change are deeply interconnected. Biodiversity underpins ecosystem resilience critical for mitigating and adapting to climate change, while climate change accelerates ecosystem degradation, creating a vicious cycle of loss. South Korea faces significant challenges due to its high ecological footprint relative to its limited biocapacity. Addressing these issues requires transformative shifts in policy and financial systems, leveraging synergies to achieve national goals such as the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and commitments under the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
Just as climate finance is critical to tackling climate change, biodiversity conservation and restoration must be supported by scaling up 'nature finance'. The GBF aims to phase out financial support for industries and practices that are harmful to biodiversity and the climate under Goal 18 and mobilize finance for more ‘nature-positive' initiatives that deliver co-benefits under Goal 19.
This seminar aims to revisit the role of finance in addressing the global biodiversity and climate crises and explore the role of private financial institutions, including commercial banks.
